About this activity

Join us for a unique Oral History Workshop at the National Archives in Abu Dhabi, aimed at understanding the past to combat overgrazing and preserve the UAE's rich traditions!

Overgrazing by camels has become a significant threat to desert ecosystems in the UAE, reducing species diversity and affecting ecosystem function and productivity. With social, cultural, and political factors contributing to overgrazing, it's essential to learn from past experiences and traditions to develop sustainable rangeland management strategies.

In this two-day workshop (conducted in Arabic), you'll:

  • Learn the tools and techniques of oral history interviews to document traditional knowledge and practices.
  • Become certified as oral history interviewers by the Environment Agency- Abu Dhabi (EAD).
  • Gain insights into the challenges of overgrazing and the importance of sustainable rangeland management.
  • Engage with fellow volunteers passionate about sustainability.

We're looking for Arabic Speakers (15 years and above), preferably Emirati Youth, to participate in this enriching workshop. Volunteers will receive a two-day training (4 hours each day) at the National Archives. After the workshop, you'll use your newly acquired skills to interview elders, community leaders and experienced camel herders, to gather invaluable information.

Volunteers must commit to participating in both workshop days.

Don't miss this opportunity to make a positive impact on our desert ecosystems and embrace the rich traditions of the UAE!

Duration:

This event will take place on both the 24th and the 25th of May, from 9:00am - 1:00pm
